More than DR: Cross-Hypervisor Replication
By Shannon Snowden, Zerto’s Sr. Technical Architect
Wouldn’t it be great to be able to failover or migrate from vSphere to Hyper-V and back again? Wouldn’t it be cool to be able to do it without in-guest VM agents or manual steps, and use the same tool and user interface to make it happen?
We thought so too, so we did something about it!
In version 4.0, Zerto introduces the industry’s first hypervisor-based replication and complete failover orchestration product that lets you have both Microsoft Hyper-V and VMware vSphere, while having a world-class disaster recovery (DR) solution between these completely disparate environments. This enables new opportunities for expanding your data protection scheme to include cross-hypervisor replication and recovery. Zerto Virtual Replication (ZVR) automatically converts the virtual machines (VMs) between platforms you no longer have to match hypervisors between your data centers.
Cross-Hypervisor Replication is a Cloud Continuity Building Block
This is all part of what we call the Zerto Cloud Continuity Platform. ZVR empowers you to utilize the hypervisor of your choosing based on workload, cost, performance and availability. You can focus on the actual data protection requirements and frees you from being locked-in by technical infrastructure limitations. If combining solutions between private, public and managed cloud service providers is the right solution, you can now do it with ZVR.
Breaking away from specific hardware and hypervisor vendors enables you to future proof your IT strategy because you are not tied into a specific hypervisor or storage vendor requirements, or technologies, when constructing a BC/DR solution for your organization. You can start to focus on workload and data mobility based on business metrics and actual service level agreements irrespective of the underlying infrastructure. Zerto makes it easy to deploy from both a technical and a licensing perspective. The same license can be used, regardless of the underlying hypervisor or storage technology, allowing you to utilize different hypervisors and not lose any investment made in your infrastructure while creating a robust BC/DR solution.
This game changing ability allows you to consider utilizing multiple hypervisors in ways that simply weren’t possible before.
Cross Hypervisor Replication Means Flexibility
With support for replication between different hypervisors, Zerto allows any combination of VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V hypervisors, depending on the requirements of the workloads and data centers. Given normal Microsoft licensing practices, Microsoft Hyper-V licenses are probably already owned by your organization. Now, you can maximize the ROI across your IT assets.
- One, simple and consistent solution to manage disaster recovery activities independent of storage and hypervisor
- Increase the utilization of already owned IT assets by leveraging Microsoft Hyper-V for your target site while utilizing VMware for production
- Simply migrate VMs from VMware vSphere to Microsoft Hyper-V then protect between Microsoft Hyper-V hypervisors for a complete migration and protection solution
- Replicate multiple Microsoft Hyper-V satellite offices into a centralized VMware data center
- Use a combination of hypervisors and use a managed cloud service or public cloud as the DR or migration target
More Options: Choose the Right Data Protection Solution that Meets Your Needs
Zerto Virtual Replication now forms part of strategic investment for your organization by not being locked-in to a specific hypervisor vendor. When your hypervisor licensing or next storage refresh is due, with Zerto Virtual Replication 4.0 you have the capability to replicate and protect from anything to anything. This gives you freedom of choice, and the capability to maintain your own target DR site, combine with or fully utilize a managed cloud or public cloud vendor based on cost and SLA – not technical limitations.
Impress your Friends
If this interests you because it’s a good fit for your organization, or if you are just a virtualization technophile, it is amazing to watch how it works so seamlessly that you have to check SCVMM or vCenter to see what platform the VM is running on pre and post migrations. It really is that smooth.
