Error ‘Database upgrade encountered an error’ due to insufficient space when upgrading Zerto

Summary
This article covers a scenario in a failed upgrade due to the insufficient space in the installation drive when Zerto is used with a local database configuration (default).
Root Cause
The default installation location is:
"C:\Program Files\Zerto\Zerto Virtual Replication"
The default database location is:
"C:\ProgramData\Zerto\Data\"
Symptoms
When upgrading ZVM, you see the following error from the upgrade wizard:
Zerto Virtual Replication -- 1: DatabaseCustomActions.ZvmUpgradeDatabase 2: Database upgrade encountered an error - see logs for more details.
From the Installer logs (Zerto_Virtual_Replication{datetimehour}_zvm.log) you see the following:
MSI (s) (78!D0) [17:09:56:091]: Product: Zerto Virtual Replication -- 1: DatabaseCustomActions.ZvmUpgradeDatabase 2: Database upgrade encountered an error - see logs for more details.
1: DatabaseCustomActions.ZvmUpgradeDatabase 2: Database upgrade encountered an error - see logs for more details.
CustomAction ZvmUpgradeDatabase returned actual error code 1603 (note this may not be 100% accurate if translation happened inside sandbox)
You will also see the exception similar to the following:
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException (0x80131904): MODIFY FILE encountered operating system error 112(There is not enough space on the disk.) while attempting to expand the physical file 'C:\ProgramData\Zerto\Data\zvm_db.mdf'.
