Error ‘Database upgrade encountered an error’ due to insufficient space when upgrading Zerto

Viewed 422 times

Summary

During the Database upgrade task, there are subtasks that are executed as part of the upgrade process.
This article covers a scenario in a failed upgrade due to the insufficient space in the installation drive when Zerto is used with a local database configuration (default).

Root Cause

The issue is due to the drive for installing ZVM doesn't have sufficient space to expand the database

The default installation location is:
"C:\Program Files\Zerto\Zerto Virtual Replication"

The default database location is:
"C:\ProgramData\Zerto\Data\"

Symptoms

When upgrading ZVM, you see the following error from the upgrade wizard:

Zerto Virtual Replication -- 1: DatabaseCustomActions.ZvmUpgradeDatabase 2: Database upgrade encountered an error -  see logs for more details.

From the Installer logs (Zerto_Virtual_Replication{datetimehour}_zvm.log) you see the following:

MSI (s) (78!D0) [17:09:56:091]: Product: Zerto Virtual Replication -- 1: DatabaseCustomActions.ZvmUpgradeDatabase 2: Database upgrade encountered an error -  see logs for more details.

1: DatabaseCustomActions.ZvmUpgradeDatabase 2: Database upgrade encountered an error -  see logs for more details.
CustomAction ZvmUpgradeDatabase returned actual error code 1603 (note this may not be 100% accurate if translation happened inside sandbox)

You will also see the exception similar to the following:

System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException (0x80131904): MODIFY FILE encountered operating system error 112(There is not enough space on the disk.) while attempting to expand the physical file 'C:\ProgramData\Zerto\Data\zvm_db.mdf'.

Solution

Add more space to the installation drive or free up some space on the drive.
Refer to the Zerto Requirements Guide for specific size requirements for a specific version of Zerto.
