Field Technical Notice: FTN-20191104
Zerto Versions Affected:
Microsoft recently announced the Public Preview of the Incremental Snapshots feature which Zerto leverages for supporting Azure Managed Disks (Premium SSD, Standard SSD and Standard HDD) as a part of the 7.5 Azure Platform Update.
This Public Preview is available on a limited number of Azure regions and Microsoft has informed Zerto that access to the Public Preview regions will be conditioned upon a shortlist of restrictions outlined here. These restrictions will apply only during the Public Preview of the Incremental Snapshots and expected to be lifted once Incremental Snapshots becomes generally available (GA).
In order to learn more about the Public Preview of the new Azure Managed Disks Incremental Snapshot, customers are advised to refer to Microsoft’s blog which provides them with up-to-date information.
The 7.5 Azure Platform Update capabilities with Azure Managed Disks on Incremental Snapshots are currently available in Public Preview for Zerto and Microsoft customers on Azure’s West Central US, North Europe, East US, Central US, Central Canada, East US 2 and Canada East regions.
Zerto will be updating the status of this Public Preview with additional Azure regions as Microsoft makes that information available. Please refer to the table below for the latest status and, also note that the information herein is subject to revision and amendment without prior notification.
Please note that the Zerto 7.5 software will install on any Azure region, but it will error out where Azure’s Incremental Snapshots functionality is not on a Public Preview or GA region.
The 7.5 Azure Platform Update does not support Unmanaged Disks. Customers operating on the 7.0 environment with VMs being replicated from Azure Unmanaged Disk into on-prem will be prevented from upgrading to 7.5.
Zerto support for Azure Managed Disks will be on Controlled Availability pending on the Microsoft’s rollout of incremental Snapshots GA support into Azure regions.
Zerto customers who desire both failover and failback capability into Azure Managed Disks were previously not able to failback without a downtime caused by moving data from Managed Disks into Unmanaged Disks.
Utilizing the new Azure Managed Disks feature in the latest Zerto 7.5 upgrade, customers will be able to leverage Microsoft’s Incremental Snapshot feature during a failback process. This feature is currently in Public Preview in Azure. Customers using Zerto 7.5 will no longer need to convert Managed Disks to Unmanaged during the failback process.
This FTN describes Microsoft’s preview conditions, and information regarding Azure regions where the Incremental Snapshot feature is or will be available for Public Preview and GA.
Actions to take
Customers who would like to take advantage of Azure Managed Disks running on Microsoft Preview regions are advised to make sure they have established network connection with the above supported regions, and then submit to landing portal for admission into the Controlled Access Release. Onboarding will not be able to be completed without these steps being followed.
