Zerto Versions Affected: 7.0 and beyond
With the introduction of Zerto 7, Zerto is automating the collection of usage billing on Cloud Service Provider software subscriptions. Software subscription customers that upgrade to Zerto 7 need to ensure all their Zerto Virtual Managers (ZVMs) and Zerto Cloud Appliances (ZCAs) are connected to Zerto’s Automated Billing Server. When a ZVM or ZCA is disconnected from Zerto’s Automated Billing Server for an extended period, then ZVMs disconnect from the VRAs which impacts continuous data protection.
In previous versions customers could optionally connect the Zerto Cloud Manager (ZCM) to Zerto’s Automated Billing Server. Starting with Zerto 7, all ZVMs and ZCAs with a Cloud or CloudOneToMany license must be connected to Zerto’s Automated Billing Server. ZCMs no longer need to connect to Zerto’s Automated Billing Server.
Zerto is evolving the Zerto Virtual Replication for Cloud Services Providers family of products (ZVR-CSP), including the Zerto Virtual Replication Software Subscription (ZVR-VM-CLD), Zerto Virtual Replication for Multi-Cloud (ZVR-MC-CLD ), and Zerto Virtual Replication for Enterprise Cloud Customers (ZVR-ECC-CLD) to enable automated usage billing for all Zerto Cloud Service Providers (CSPs).
Zerto Cloud Service Providers that use the ZVR-CSP products must maintain a connection from each licensed ZVM/ZCA to Zerto’s Automated Billing Server.
Starting with Zerto 7, if a ZVM/ZCA is licensed for software subscription and not connected to Zerto’s Automated Billing Server, then the user is alerted for 15 days that the ZVM/ZCA is not sending usage data to Zerto’s Automated Billing Server. If the ZVM/ZCA connection to Zerto’s Billing Server is not in place after 15 days, then the ZVM is disconnected from the VRAs. When the ZVM is disconnected from the VRAs then checkpoints are no longer generated on the recovery VRAs.
Note that the change impacts only ZVM/ZCA that are licensed under the Cloud Service Provider licenses. If a CSP deploys a ZVM/ZCA unlicensed on the end customer site, e.g. in a DRaaS scenario, there is no change and no need to ensure connectivity.
Actions To Take
Zerto recommends that customers verify the connection to Zerto’s Automated Billing Server on every licensed ZVM and ZCA before upgrading to or installing Zerto 7. Zerto recommends that customers address any banner alerts stating that the ZVM/ZCA failed to send usage information for billing purposes after installing Zerto 7. If a ZVM/ZCA is not connected to Zerto’s Automated Billing Server or any other external application over the Internet for security purposes, then Zerto recommends that those customers contact their Zerto account team before upgrading to the affected release.
