Verifying Connectivity Between Sites and VRAs

Summary

The network/VPN is down or the required ports are not open. The following may be symptoms observed which would prompt a user to verify connectivity between sites:
  • VPGs show RPO not meeting SLA.
  • Syncs show no movement or no ETA on when they will finish.
  • Site or VRAs showing as disconnected from peer site or VRAs.

Root Cause

The network/VPN is down or the required ports are not open.

Symptoms

The following may be symptoms observed which would prompt a user to verify connectivity between sites:
  • VPGs show RPO not meeting SLA.
  • Syncs show no movement or no ETA on when they will finish.
  • Site or VRAs showing as disconnected from peer site or VRAs.

Solution

If ICMP traffic is allowed, ping can be used to verify IP connectivity to rule out network connectivity issues.

Telnet can be used to validate that the required ports are open.

To verify connectivity between ZVMs if any site is below version 8.0:
Open an administrative command window on one ZVM and run the following to its peer site IP address:
telnet <peer ZVM IP address> 9081
Repeat the above step from the other ZVM.

To verify connectivity between ZVMs if both sites are at version 8.0:
Open an administrative command window on one ZVM and run the following to its peer site IP address:
telnet <peer ZVM IP address> 9071
Repeat the above step from the other ZVM.

To verify port connectivity between ZVM and it's VRAs
Open an administrative command window on the ZVM and run the following to its VRA IP addresses:
telnet <VRA IP address #1> 4005
telnet <VRA IP address #1> 4006
telnet <VRA IP address #1> 4009

Repeat the above steps for each VRA on the site.  Repeat the process for the other site's ZVM and its VRAs.

To verify port connectivity between VRAs and their peer site VRAs
Remote into the ZVM on one side and use PuTTY to connect to it's VRA. To connect to a VRA, follow the article Connecting to a VRA via SSH. Run the following commands:
telnet <peer site VRA IP address #1> 4007
telnet <peer site VRA IP address #1> 4008

Repeat the above steps for each VRA on the peer side.  Repeat the same steps for each VRA on this side.
**Note**: If you are on ZVR version 6.5 or below, contact Zerto Support for assistance with connecting to the VRAs.
