Problem: Impermissible static Ethernet address: It conflicts with VMware reserved MACs

Viewed 1951 times

Root Cause

The MAC address of the recovery VM is conflicted with the reserved MAC addresses in vCenter of the recovery site.

Symptoms

When running a failover test or failover live, the task on ZVM GUI might show an error:

Impermissible static Ethernet address: '00:0c:29:xx:xx:xx'. It conflicts with VMware reserved MACs
orĀ
Impermissible static Ethernet address: '00:50:56:xx:xx:xx'. It conflicts with VMware reserved MACs

In vCenter, a similar error might show up:

00:0c:29:XX:YY:ZZ is not an allowed static Ethernet address. It conflicts with VMware reserved MACs.
or
00:50:56:XX:YY:ZZ is not a valid static Ethernet address. It conflicts with VMware reserved MACs for other usages.

Solution

The MAC address of the recovery VM should be manually changed to a non-conflicting one, as per the following VMware KB:
