How to Properly Decommission a Datastore Used by Zerto

Summary

Administrators may need to decommission an old datastore for plethora of reasons. To avoid potential impact on the Zerto side, specific steps must be taken prior to the decommission of the datastore from VCenter or vCloud Director.

Steps

To properly decommission a datastore, follow the steps below depending on the Recovery Site type.

Recovery Site is vCenter:
  1. Open ZVM GUI and edit all associated VPGs and VRAs that are utilizing the datastore in question.
  2. For VPGs, change default recovery datastore to another under 'Replication' tab if the future decommissioned datastore is selected.
  3. Click VM setting under Replication tab and change recovery datastore to another if the future decommissioned datastore is selected.
  4. Repeat the steps for all VPGs.
  5. For VRAs, click the Setup tab in the Zerto GUI and select each VRA. Ensure all VRAs are not utilizing the future decommissioned datastore.
  6. Should a VRA have the future decommissioned datastore selected, simply select a different datastore and then press Save.
  7. Once all Update tasks have completed successfully in Zerto GUI (double check via Monitoring tab), then decommission the datastore as normal from the VCenter side.
Recovery site is vCloud Director:
  1. Open ZVM GUI and edit any VPG that is using the future decommissioned datastore.
  2. Go to Replication tab and click VM settings.
  3. Select recovery storage policy and journal storage policy again (it is not necessary to change it to another, just select again).
  4. Save settings and click Done to update VPG. Confirm success of the task by opening the Monitoring tab.
  5. Repeat the steps for all VPGs.
  6. For VRAs, click the Setup tab in the Zerto GUI and select each VRA. Ensure all VRAs are not utilizing the future decommissioned datastore.
  7. Should a VRA have the future decommissioned datastore selected, simply select a different datastore and then press Save.
  8. Once all Update tasks have completed successfully in Zerto GUI (double check via Monitoring tab), then decommission the datastore as normal from the vCloud Director side.
