Five Key Takeaways from Best Practices for Disaster Recovery in a Virtualized World

We were really pleased that so many of you joined us for the Zerto / Forrester Webinar “Best Practices for DR in a Virtualized World” last week.   The replay is now live on our site.

forrester-150x72Rachel Dines, Analyst at Forrester, gave an overview of the DR plans of her clients and talked about the research Forrester recently completed on the subject.

Ziv Kedem, CEO of Zerto, reviewed how Hypervisor-Based Replication provides a new alternative to array-based data replication and recovery that is built specifically for virtualized environments.

Here are the five key takeaways from their interesting discussion:

1. “People are adopting server virtualization for DR”

79% of those surveyed in a recent Forrester report cited improved DR as ‘very important’ or ‘important’ reasons for adopting server virtualization.   Companies are moving towards virtualization (or increased  virtualization) in order make DR easier.

2. “DR is not an insurance policy.”

According to Rachel, the conversation around BC/ DR needs to move from High Availability / Disaster Recovery to IT Service Continuity.   Companies need to stay always on and always available = continuous availability. They need to be uptime focused vs. downtime focused.

3. IT service continuity for virtualized environments can really only be accomplished with some of the new technologies that have recently become available.

Rachel discussed hypervisor-based replication as a scalable and reliable solution for mission-critical applications.

4. “Companies should shift focus from reactive response to downtime, to planning, good processes and preventative efforts.”

5. “Until hypervisor-based replication came along, solutions for large enterprise IT service continuity were not virtual-aware.”

“Virtual-aware” includes elements like protection of VMs and VDMKs as opposed to LUNs, hardware agnosticity, setup flexibility and support for storage DRS.

How can you ensure that your environment is less reactive, focuses on uptime, and that your IT service continuity is virtual-aware?
