Disasters can hit your data center at any time. This could be power outages causing site failures, server upgrades gone bad, application crashes or even file loss from human error or ransomware. Once your datacenter is affected, do you know how quickly you can get your business back up and running? It really depends on two things: RPO and RTO. Recovery Point Objective is the amount of data loss incurred from the last time you were able to capture that data. Recovery Time Objective is the amount of time it takes to recover that data from that point in time capture. In this example, we’re showing about 8 hours of recovery time and that’s just for the data. This isn’t considering the true RTO impacting recent sales, incoming work or loss of productivity. Lastly, when considering RPO and RTO remember: while all that cost is important to your business, equally important is the cost of downtime to your company’s reputation. Warren Buffett once said it takes 20 years to build your reputation and only 5 minutes to ruin. It’s time to re-think what RPO and RTO mean to your business. And that’s the bald truth.
