Three Ways Your DR Falls Flat – Part III

In our last post, “Three Ways Your Disaster Recovery Falls Short – Part II“, we discussed the ways DR complicates your day-to-day operations. Today’s post, the third and final post of the series, addresses our final example of the ways in which your DR solution may fall flat – manual and complex failover.
Automating & Simplifying Failover
Failover and failback of applications, workloads, and especially full data centers is not trivial, to say the least. Process and expertise are critical. Without both you aren’t going far. Under normal circumstances, and without a real disaster at hand, testing failover is planned and the team is on the ready. But what happens when the uh-oh event strikes? What if the needed application, storage, or network person(s) is not available? Worse, what if it is a site level event? Now add in a regional event such as a hurricane, tornado, tsunami, earthquake, quarantine or worse something like 9/11. In those scenarios admins are probably thinking a whole lot more about their family than their employer.
Whatever solution is put in place should be manageable by more than one or two people who know and can complete all of the manual steps for failover and failback of the data center. And it better be reliable because you can’t always count on having all the required expertise all of the time. Plus, in a true disaster things will not go as planned, some or most required staff will not come into work, mistakes will be made, etc.

So let’s review the three ways your DR solution may be failing you:
- Deploying DR into your data center is time consuming and complex
- Testing DR is complex and impacts your production environment
- Your failover is not automated
Find a solution that is easily deployed, where testing is simple and does not impact your production environment and where failover is fully automated, and you, the IT manager tasked with the responsibility for disaster recovery & BC/ DR, will rest easy.
