I Am Not a Booth Babe Ask me a Question!

i-am-not-a-booth-babe-zerto-pinAfter being mistaken for a “booth babe” (and surprising a prospect by actually talking tech) Jennifer Gill, Director of Global Product Marketing at Zerto, came up with a plan. This year at VMworld she suggested creating buttons for the women of Zerto to wear at the event that said, “I am not a booth babe. Ask me a question.” The idea was to gently challenge the stereotype of women’s roles at such events and raise awareness around their evolving and important place in leading technology organizations. We women of Zerto can talk tech!

Jenn’s idea actually ended up snowballing and being adopted (with permission from Zerto) by VMware industry blogger Hans De Leenheer, who created buttons without the Zerto branding for women attending VMworld Europe to use. It grabbed a lot of attention on social media and was incredibly well-received by both women wearing the buttons and anyone who saw the buttons and engaged in the campaign.

I feel like I was part of the problem. Covering the CES, for six years, I was often reminded, “The outside-display people are sales. The techies are inside the displays. This was especially true for the Asian companies. I wanted the MTBF stats, thermal range, and power consumption. I always asked the outside people for the tech person. (Yes, even if it was a guy.)
